The Sofa Search
Okay, honestly this may be boring to some of you all, but in case you like to geek-out on house-stuff like I do, keep reading.
Have you ever tried to find the perfect couch? I sweeeeeear Jeff and I looked for a year. We actually needed to find two couches. One for upstairs (comfy yet stylish sectional) and one for downstairs (leather sofa). I was talking to a friend about our issue of couch-picky-ness, and I was excited to hear that I guess it's not just Jeff and I. So, if you're in the market for a new sectional or sofa, here are a few ones that made our top list.
Oh and here are the things we looked for!
- Leather: high-quality, soft, cozy
- Cushions: firm enough so they don't warp, yet comfortable, not floppy
- Style: modern, minimalist, yet comfortable (ha, pretty hard to find)
- Size: large enough so that we can both sprawl out
- Color: either a neutral gray or camel
- Quality: excellent! We want to keep this couch for a long time, so I want it to last. I had an endless battle with our last couch that had buttons popping off it almost daily. I HATED IT SO MUCH, just ask anyone. Quality was key this time around.

1. Andes 3-piece sectional // 2. Article Burrard Sectional // 3. West Elm Axel Sofa // 4. Gus Logan Sectional // 5. RH Modern Lennon Leather sofa // 6. EQ3 Eve Sofa in Coachella Warm Gray leather // 7. Room & Board Hess Leather sofa
Upstairs loft family room: We ordered the Andes sectional from West Elm (option 1), with the worn velvet fabric and brass legs. At first Jeff was like, "velvet?!?! ewwwww", but the West Elm designers swore up and down that this was going to be the most durable fabric with kiddos, plus velvet is everywhere right now! It won't show stains, won't pill or tear, and is also super soft and cozy. Many of the tweeds we liked already were showing pill on the floor models, or little threads snagging, etc. Blaaa, that kind of stuff gets to me if I have to look at it everyday.
Downstairs living area: We went with the Lennon leather sofa from the Restoration Hardware Modern line (option 5). Ultimately, this was the most buttery soft, high-quality leather we'd seen, and also it was super customizable, and so so comfy. We'd never really felt like RH fit our style (too traditional), but then my sis-in-law told me about the new RH Modern line which really is so gorg! We were able to pick the length of our sofa, the depth, and then of course the leather and metal leg colors. It came pretty quickly too - maybe four weeks? We were really torn between this one and the Eve sofa from EQ3. The Eve is such a high-quality pick though for a modern leather sofa, but in the end the leather colors available weren't exactly what we wanted. Some camels were too orange, some grays were too dark or too light, etc. We have a lot of warm-toned wood in this house, so in the end chose a cool gray rather than camel because we needed to balance out all that wood with a few cooler-toned pieces. We chose leather because of the kiddos - needs to be wipeable for obvious reasons. The West Elm Axel leather sofa I'd loved and seen on a lot of design blogs, however, it was so HARD and I couldn't picture cozying up on it.
So in a nutshell, this was our process. If you're trying to decide on a piece of furniture for your living room, there are so many affordable and customizable options out there that didn't exist before, such as Article or Interior Define. Make sure and be on the lookout for deals too. West Elm has them going just about every day (sign up for the emails). EQ3 does too - and our sales person was even willing to give us the quoted sale price in the months following. RH offers a membership for $100 a year but it saves you 25% off everything, all the time (totally worth it).
Side note: I get asked about our rug all the time! Here is the link for it. It's cream - so yes, we try to keep shoes and food away from it. Ours is 8x10 size and we've been pretty happy with it so far! It is wool so it does shed a bit, but that's calming down now. Overall a great wool rug for a reasonable price!
Happy Tuesday, friends!
